Journey Overview
Travel from Timika to Agats, where raised walkways connect a town shaped by water. Explore the Asmat Museum of Culture and Progress and meet local carvers to discover how art expresses family histories, identity and ancestral connections.
Continue by private boat to Per, where visits are arranged with the community. Learn about carving and sago traditions, explore smaller waterways and, where invited, enter a traditional communal house.
With an expedition guide and local Asmat team, the journey offers time to observe, listen and gain a closer understanding of life along the rivers.
Itinerary
Day 1 — Timika
Arrive at Mozes Kilangin Airport and transfer privately to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, explore a local market with your guide for an introduction to the people and produce of Papua’s highlands and southern lowlands. The remainder of the day is at leisure before your journey into Asmat.
Day 2 — Timika → Ewer → Agats
Fly to Ewer and continue by private boat to Agats. Visit the Asmat Museum of Culture and Progress, where carvings, shields and ceremonial objects introduce the region’s artistic heritage. Explore the town’s raised walkways and, subject to local arrangements, meet a carver or visit a workshop. Nearby Syuru may also be included.
Day 3 — Agats → Per Village → Agats
Travel by private longboat to Per for a day arranged with the village community. Meet local carvers and, where invited, visit a jew, a traditional communal house. Depending on village activities and river conditions, explore by canoe, learn about sago preparation or observe fishing and boatbuilding. Return to Agats in the afternoon.
Day 4 — Agats → Ewer → Timika
Return to Ewer by private boat for your scheduled flight to Timika. Transfer to your hotel and enjoy an afternoon at leisure. An overnight stay here allows additional time between the expedition and your onward journey.
Day 5 — Timika → Timika Airport
Transfer privately to Mozes Kilangin Airport for your onward flight.
